I am thrilled to introduce the inaugural linkup of My Refined Style. During the last several months I have met such a fascinating array of women over 40. We decided it was time to set up a monthly forum just to highlight these fabulous fashionistas and their over 40 style!

Fall Trend, Head-to-toe Black

Fabulous Black - My Refined Style #1

Earlier this week I posted about the head-to-toe black trend for Fall, but today I wanted to change things up by adding some of my favorite accessories to the fabulous black fashion palette.

Fabulous black & My Refined Style #1

Black is the perfect palette for showcasing your fabulous jewelry pieces. I brought out some of my “big girl” jewelry. These days I often prefer to wear silver and stainless steel, but I still like to break out the gold and diamonds from time to time.

And, by all means, don’t forget the shoes! Animal prints are the perfect companion to black. These leopard heels are my favorites.

  1. Love your oufit, and your blog! I am 50 and started my blog last year, loving all the connections..middle age gals rock!

    Valerie

  2. Christy Peeples DuBois says:

The wonderful canvas of colors is probably the most fabulous thing I can think of during fall but I am always looking forward to the cooler temperatures after having so many 90+ and 100 degree days in Mississippi.

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

I love the colors of Fall. As a Florida girl, we would often drive up to the Carolinas just to see the leaves.

  3. Ivy Torrie says:

Always confused what to wear. Now I can get some great ideas.

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

It’s always nice to have a starting point…thanks for stopping by, Ivy!

  4. adrian says:

I found this post in my Triberr stream, but I think I know you. Were you at the Build Your Blog Conference earlier this year? Anyway, great post. I like to wear black, but with a pop of color such as turquoise , or hot pink, but I love the cheetah print too.

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

Hi Adrian, the all black look definitely is not for everyone…even though a lot of people still try to make it work. A pop of color is always a great thing!

  5. Great outfit! I love how the monochromatic palette really shows of the necklace, and those shoes are too perfect!!!

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

      Hi Tif,

Yes, I agree…a monochromatic palette really does let your accessories shine. Thanks so much for stopping by, I hope you will come back.

  6. Alecz says:

The necklace you added to this outfit is stunning!

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

Thanks Alex…I often wear silver, so it’s fun to break out the gold every now and then.

  7. Thanks 4 linking up to Top of the World Style. I like the minimalism of your outfit with just the necklace. Perfect

  8. Mary says:

Black is definitely a major staple in my wardrobe. Always chic with very little fuss.

Love your elegant black ensemble. So pretty with your leopard shoes and pendant necklace!

  9. All black is the absolute uniform here in Nashville. Honestly, there are so many women wearing all black at every fashion function I attend that it looks positively funereal. I call them the Cashiers (after Johnny Cash).
I like how you’ve styled you’re version of all black. Just the right accessories really elevate the look, You’ve transcended Cashier straight into chic 😉

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

Alicia, you cracked me up with this comment…love it!! I know exactly what you are talking about and it really boils down to this, all black is not suited to all skin types and coloring. I happen to be a strong winter, so it actually works for me, but it can really wash some people out. I am so glad I transcended the cashier level for you ;)…thanks for stopping by!

  10. Fun stuff…and great ideas for ways to take a fresh look at what’s already hanging in my closet! Thanks!

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

Hey Roxanne,it’s always fun to mix and match things…you can end up with a whole new wardrobe!

  11. you look fabulous indeed, Shellie..everything looks good on you :)..and the shoes..they are killers 🙂

  12. Kathleen says:

Love your outfit Shellie. I use black a lot, but I need a splash of color closer to the face.
Thanks for hosting this cool party.
    Kathleen

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

Hey Kath, that is so smart of you to realize that too much black can be too much for your coloring. All black definitely does not work for everyone.

  13. Corina Ramos says:

    Hi Shellie,

Love the outfit! I’ve always loved black…that’s my color. The leopard shoes and necklace really compliments it…I love it!

I’ll be checking out the other posts in the link up. Have a great day and weekend!

    Cori

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

Hey Cori, thanks for stopping by. Just wanted you to know how much I appreciate you Twitter shares and encouragement.

  14. Paula R says:

You look lovely, but I generally prefer not to wear head to toe black (been there, done that, back in the day when I was trying to be ‘edgy’). It’s a great idea for travelling, and for somber occasions of course, but otherwise, if I were to wear it, I would definitely go bold with some bright accessories – like red or yellow heels, a dramatic colorful scarf, and/or a pair of ‘Hollywood’ sunglasses. ~Paula:-) #MidLifeLuv

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

I agree Paula, the all-black look is not for everyone. In fact for people with certain skin coloring, I would encourage them to keep black away from their face all together.

  15. Cherie says:

Love the all black look Shellie and your necklace is the perfect accessory. Thank you for spearheading the “My Refined Style” Link Up, so much fun to co-host with you.

I love wearing head-to-toe black! Besides being easy, it’s classic, timeless and as you’ve shown, so easy to accessorize! And, I’m so happy to find some more fellow mid-life bloggers, thank you!

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

Hi Carrie, I’m so glad you found us. It’s also nice to meet another short-haired, fitness-minded girl!

  17. Linda Hobden says:

I did like those leopard print heels! I have a pair of heeled ankle boots in leopard print too – being 50 I still rock my tastes ! I’ m a colour fan myself but I do have that LBD and leopard print heels look fab with it. I have also invested in navy, greys & greens this season. ? Visited from #midlifeluv

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

Hi Linda, I like to spread the love between colors and my blacks…I like it all. Now, I do have to admit that the leopard heels are in my happy place. Thanks for stopping by!

  18. I love an all black outfit to highlight a gorgeous statement necklace (or statement shoes, scarf, bag, etc.) And you, of course, look fabulous the way you have styled your all black outfit! Thanks for the link up!
