I must admit…I love cold weather clothes a lot better than summer clothes. Layered outfits are fun to put together and they are often much more forgiving on the figure!

So, you’ve pulled your boots out and dusted them off for cooler weather. I love the long top over jeans as well as the next girl, but why not try a dress over jeans to shake things up a bit?

Dress Over Jeans

You can put a dress over jeans to transition a summer look to fall.

dress over jeans

This summer, I wore this dress with black leggings or black Bermuda shorts. But, I have to say I like this look the best. I think it works so well because it employs the law of thirds.

This dress over jeans breaks the body up into visual thirds, which makes the outfit and overall look more visually appealing.
I added this black jacket to break the top of the outfit into thirds. Then, adding a dress over the jeans also breaks the bottom up into thirds. So, I end up with an a combination that’s visually pleasing from top to bottom.

This time of year I often post outfits topped off with a denim jacket because of this same visual thirds idea. Try layering a shorter jacket over a longer bottom layer to achieve the same effect!

Snap a picture if you have tried layering an outfit for Fall. I would love to show off your style in a future post.

Now, it’s time to get to another My Refined Style Linkup!

lovely outfit – super cute boots!

  5. Sheela Goh says:

Being so short, most of my tunics turn out as dresses for me, and for that reason alone, I’m a big fan of wearing them the way you have here, Shellie. One of my fave ways!! I have to ask, the lighter bits of your hair, are they natural or highlights? They’re SO cool.

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

Hey Sheela, the highlights are my own. I am turning gray everywhere, but I have a particularly white streak at the temple so I keep it natural. The rest of my hair is colored. I found this the easiest way to lighten things up as a natural black-headed girl without going blond, light brown or red.

  6. This is such a cute look and I really think I am going to copy it! I have a velvet black moto I just got recently and I can’t wait to try it out. I love the stripes of the dress with the black of your jacket, too!

  9. I really like this look! I’ve always worn dresses with leggings but lately started wearing more dresses over pants! Your dress looks fabulous over jeans, and the jacket you added is absolutely perfect! Truly looking fabulous!

Thanks for the link up & Happy Thursday!

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

Thanks Andrea. I especially like the jeans option when it’s really chilly out.

  10. amy says:

Amazing look! Love the dress over jeans. I actually feel for myself that I prefer dressing for warmer temperatures, because all the layers in fall and winter add a lot of bulk to my figure and is therefore less flattering. I think a huge part of it is where you carry your weight. For me it’s the top half of my body, so when I start layering, even thin layers, the bulk starts to pile on.

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

Hi Amy, I’m also top heavy. I stay away from heavy sweaters because they do have bulk. Instead I go for structured jackets that actually serve to de-emphasize my top.

  11. I love this dress over jeans look. I just don’t have the right dress to do it with! Popping a moto jacket over it takes it to a whole different level… LOVE! There’s something about a the jacket and your haircut that really works so beautifully. xx
