Many of you will remember this iconic line, “Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion.” It’s from my all-time favorite movie, Steel Magnolias. No matter how many times I’ve watched it, I am still drawn into the close group of women who share their lives with each other; good times and bad.

Laughter Through Tears

There’s just something special about laughing and crying with a friend or loved one. Just taking a moment to become vulnerable with a person whom you trust wholeheartedly.

Last night, I went to see the special showing of To Joey With Love. It is a poignant love story and tribute to Joey Feek who succumbed to cancer last March at the age of 41. There, I experienced a real-life portrayal of laughter through tears.

I knew it would be sad, which attests to the pile of tissues in my purse, but that wasn’t what impacted me most about the movie. Instead, I left feeling a greater sense of hope and purpose. We spend so much time, often too much time, striving to remove all discomfort from our lives instead of trying to live out those tough moments where sweetness can hide.

Joey sang that it wasn’t so much the years she lived, but what she did with those years that mattered most. The movie was a testament to seizing each moment and making it count.
