Every now and then you put on an outfit that feels right in every way. For me, it’s usually a look that conveys carefree confidence. I can still rock skinny jeans over 40…I just do it in a refined, put-together way.
It’s time for the 8th My Refined Style Fashion Over 40 linkup! Every month I’m inspired by the creativity and fierce fashion choices my fellow over-40 fashionistas are making.
Rock Skinny Jeans Over 40
I think the word “skinny” throws a lot of us off. Few women over 40 would use this adjective to describe themselves or their clothing. And, many of us have a few curves that we would just assume not display underneath a thin layer of stretched denim…I can appreciate this sentiment.
Still, I believe you can rock skinny jeans over 40 by putting a different spin on the classic silhouette.
It has a lot to do with the area of your body you choose to emphasize. Typically, skinny jeans emphasize the rear view; however, that’s not the only way skinny jeans can highlight the figure.
Skinny jeans elongate the leg to make you appear taller and leaner; especially when paired with a neutral-colored pump or wedge. In fact, only the bottom half of my jeans are even visible in this outfit.
When buying skinny jeans over 40, consider the following tips:
- Skinny does not have to mean skin tight; however, skinny jeans are typically made to be worn that way. Be willing to go up a size to find a pair that fits without feeling like a bandage.
- Make sure to consider the back pocket placement. Long back pockets or flapped pockets are seldom flattering.
- Try multiple brands. Different jean manufacturers have different cuts.
- Skinny jeans are most flattering if they stop just at the top of the foot. Excess material at the bottom adds bulk.

I am loving my skinny jeans over 40! Probably because I have more confidence over 40 than I did at any other time of my life. And one of my favorite trends is dresses over pants or jeans. This is a fabulous look, Shellie!

I love this look on you. The blue is so pretty. I am always drawn to blue prints. I have been losing weight and trying to reevaluate my wardrobe and get rid of the stuff that screams “old” or “out of date”. Your posts are always inspiring.

I’m 53 and wear skinny jeans more than any other style of pants. My legs and but are my tightest, most toned feature on my body…more than a lot of my younger counterparts. Age has nothing to do with it…body type does. I do love the idea of wearing skinny jeans with a dress. I’ve been seeing that a lot lately, but mostly because they are making dresses so stinking short these days no one feels comfortable wearing them alone, even the young girls! It’s become very fashionable to wear jeans with a dress.
