Rock Skinny Jeans Over 40

Every now and then you put on an outfit that feels right in every way. For me, it’s usually a look that conveys carefree confidence. I can still rock skinny jeans over 40…I just do it in a refined, put-together way.

It’s time for the 8th My Refined Style Fashion Over 40 linkup! Every month I’m inspired by the creativity and fierce fashion choices my fellow over-40 fashionistas are making.

Rock Skinny Jeans Over 40

Rock Skinny Jeans Over 40

I think the word “skinny” throws a lot of us off. Few women over 40 would use this adjective to describe themselves or their clothing. And, many of us have a few curves that we would just assume not display underneath a thin layer of stretched denim…I can appreciate this sentiment.

Still, I believe you can rock skinny jeans over 40 by putting a different spin on the classic silhouette.

It has a lot to do with the area of your body you choose to emphasize. Typically, skinny jeans emphasize the rear view; however, that’s not the only way skinny jeans can highlight the figure.

Skinny jeans elongate the leg to make you appear taller and leaner; especially when paired with a neutral-colored pump or wedge. In fact, only the bottom half of my jeans are even visible in this outfit.

When buying skinny jeans over 40, consider the following tips:

  1. Skinny does not have to mean skin tight; however, skinny jeans are typically made to be worn that way. Be willing to go up a size to find a pair that fits without feeling like a bandage.
  2. Make sure to consider the back pocket placement. Long back pockets or flapped pockets are seldom flattering.
  3. Try multiple brands. Different jean manufacturers have different cuts.
  4. Skinny jeans are most flattering if they stop just at the top of the foot. Excess material at the bottom adds bulk.

  1. I am loving my skinny jeans over 40! Probably because I have more confidence over 40 than I did at any other time of my life. And one of my favorite trends is dresses over pants or jeans. This is a fabulous look, Shellie!

(applause) I love how you look, Shellie!! I have to be honest. I’ve been hearing things about not wearing skinnies if you’re this shape or of that age, which is completely nonsensical. So long as you’re comfy and you love it, I say wear it and own it 🙂

Speaking of loveliness, my weekly Friday link-up is live and on the blog now, and I would love for you to come and share this vision of loveliness xoxo

I love this look on you. The blue is so pretty. I am always drawn to blue prints. I have been losing weight and trying to reevaluate my wardrobe and get rid of the stuff that screams “old” or “out of date”. Your posts are always inspiring.

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

It always feels good to purge the closet and think of new possibilities!

  8. jodie says:

I think you’re absolutely right—it has nothing to do with how the jeans fit, but the name that throws women off! That’s why I keep telling my mom—just try it on!
You look so great in this—even if the shirt were shorter, you’d rock it!! jodie

Thanks Jodie! I always love to see what you have your mom wearing 😉

  9. CHERIE says:

I love skinny jeans and think that whether or not you can wear them has nothing to do with age, but with body type. You look great! Love the blue on you!! Great to co-host with you Shellie.

  12. Ada says:

Love the way you styled skinny jeans. That blue floral dress is gorgeous and I love it over the pants so much. Always a pleasure stopping by and joining your linkup, as well.

I run a linkup on Thursdays and I would love for you to stop by and linkup this outfit. Welcome by and linkup every Thursday. Thanks and have a great day! Ada. =)

Glad you stopped by Ada. I have added your linkup to my visit list!

  13. Amy says:

I’m 53 and wear skinny jeans more than any other style of pants. My legs and but are my tightest, most toned feature on my body…more than a lot of my younger counterparts. Age has nothing to do with it…body type does. I do love the idea of wearing skinny jeans with a dress. I’ve been seeing that a lot lately, but mostly because they are making dresses so stinking short these days no one feels comfortable wearing them alone, even the young girls! It’s become very fashionable to wear jeans with a dress.

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

You are so right, Amy! We are all different and need to figure out which styles best highlight our best features.

  14. REBECCA says:

That was brave of you to pair skinnies with a dress and it came out great! Come check out my latest CHICWISH collab & let me know what you think of the LBD! Have a lovely Mothers Day weekend!

  15. Love this dress over this skinnies! Great mix of feminine and edge. Thanks so much for the link up!

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

Thanks Kathrine! I think the edge is what I like most about the outfit. I always gravitate to outfits that have just a little something different thrown in.

Hello! Discovered you through our mutual friend Andrea. What a gorgeous group of gals you Refined Stylistas are. I came by to compliment you on your hair. Love your cut. Going tomorrow to have mine cut and your pic is going with me. But once I arrived at your blog, I discovered that not only do you have a great ‘do but you have a very classy, casual sense of style. What a fab post about skinny jeans. Amen, that we over-40 (for me, that would be WAAAAAAY over 40!) women don’t have to wear bandage-fitting skinnies. I like my skinnies a little less skinny, thank you. Will be following you on Bloglovin’. Nice to meet you!

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

Hi Leslie, I’m so glad you found us! I am always looking for pics to take in to the hair stylist and it’s nice to be your style inspiration 😉
