This lovely dress combines two popular spring trends: serenity blue and knife pleats. It seemed like the perfect look for Easter Sunday.

I fell in love with this dress on a recent trip to Singapore. They were running a huge 80% off sale, so I knew it had to be mine!

If you have followed me for any period of time, then you’ll know that the color of this dress falls well outside my normal color palette. I am typically drawn to sharp monochromatic contrasts or vivid colors, but it’s still good to shake things up every now and then. I also wanted to give a nod to serenity blue as this season’s “it” color.

It was the dress’ fabulous details that grabbed my attention. The construction of this dress utilizes some intriguing pleated details at the hem and neckline. Knife pleats are also a popular trend for Spring. The asymmetrical hemline adds further visual interest.

At first, I debated whether the length of the skirt was too short as I typically choose styles that hit the top of the knee, but I finally decided that the longer pleated section provided a workable compromise. I just crossed my legs right over left 😉

This dress just called for ultra-feminine accessories, which always make me smile.

Tip For Wearing Knife Pleats

Knife pleats give architectural detail to any outfit, but you may want to consider a garment’s construction when wearing them. Because of the folded aspect, pleats can immediately add volume. So, be careful about excessive pleating; especially around the hip area.

I like how ASOS styled this pleated midi skirt. Pairing the skirt with a jacket draws the eye away from the hip area. Also, the light material of this skirts keeps it from becoming too bulky.

What about it…do you see any pleats in your future?

Hi Shellie – I love the pleats and the asymmetrical details of this dress. I noticed that the serenity blue is one of the “in” colors this season, so even though I’m not very fashion forward ;o) since I sew and refashion garments for my Etsy shop, I always kind of keep an eye out for what’s going on out there in the world. Thanks for sharing these ideas and inspiration! Nina @ Vintage Mama’s Cottage

I’ve always stayed away from pleats as they can do scary things to the hips! I love this little bit of pleat detail though, what a great find.

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

Thanks Julie, these pleats were in just the right place not to add any bulk.

  5. Great dress! The color looks great on you, and I just love the pleated details – so unique!

  6. What a gorgeous dress!!! I quite like pleats. I have a few blouses with pin tuck pleats and find that they add an interesting detail to my overall outfits.

That’s a lovely dress, Shellie, and while I’ve personally never been a fan of knife pleats, that doesn’t stop me from admiring ladies who wear it with absolute panache, such as yourself 🙂 Singapore was my surrogate home, incidentally, I lived there for a solid 15 years 🙂

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

Hi Sheela, Singapore was a lovely city. I am guessing it would be a great place to live….so glad you liked the dress!

Now that’s a wonderful way to wear pleats without looking 5 sizes bigger!! What a great dress!
It is interesting that it’s blue in color….on my computer monitor, i would have said tan or gold! And I’m with you…I love color, but it’s nice to change it up sometimes!!
IMO it definitely is not too short—your legs are great and you have the asymmetry going on! jodie
