Colorful Shoes – Thursday Favorite Things
February 4, 2016Midlife Perspective On Weight, Fitness and Priorities
February 6, 2016I’m so excited to bring you the 5th installment of the My Refined Style Linkup! Each month I am blown away by your posts, which just goes to show that fabulous has no age. But first, I want to talk a little bit about wearing color over 40.
Wearing Color Over 40
Color is the midlife woman’s best friend. If you’re like me, you’ve noticed that your natural skin tone and hair coloring have lost some of their vibrancy in recent years. That’s why wearing color over 40 is so important.
Color has the power to warm up your complexion and bring out your features.
I brought out my inner Elvis to show off this fabulous purple fringed poncho. I am a strong winter, so my best colors are cool and clear, like this purple. If you are not sure what colors best suit you, head over to Chic Fashionista to use their color analysis tool.
Of course, color is not the only thing this outfit has going for it. The fringed poncho is just so sassy paired with these flared jeans. The camel colored leather belt and boots contrast perfectly with the deep purple. Then, I finished off the look with a beaded necklace and rolled paper bracelet, both hand crafted in the Philippines and an amethyst ring from Thailand.
Now that I’ve shown you my style inspiration, it’s time for you to show me yours. Let’s get to the My Refined Style Linkup!

I don’t think I could ever leave the house without being dressed in my favorite color of the day. I am over 50 and people tell me I look 40 so that in itself gives me reason to rejoice!
Love your blog style. Visiting from Markets of Sunshine blog.
I really think the right color does a lot to add color and warmth to our skin tone! Thanks for stopping by.
What a fantastic color! And the fringe adds such a fun playfulness.

We’d love to see you at our Tuesday Fashion Party Link Up!

Thanks Katey, I will check out your linkup!
This is just a GORGEOUS color on you…it is one I don’t have much in my wardrobe, though I do tend to wear jewel tones – emeralds and royal blues. The photos of you are wonderful.
Thanks Danielle. I bet you would rock the purple! Thanks for stopping by.
The purple looks fabulous on you, Shellie! I love the poncho with the flares – great look!
I agree that color is so important. I have to say though for me, when I wear color I am stepping out of my comfort zone. I always gravitate toward the neutral colors. It’s hard to liven things up sometimes but I am going to start trying.
Hi Nicole, the easiest way to start is to add a colorful accessory to an otherwise neutral base.
Oh you look gorgeous in all the photos. I love the purple! I used to wear corporate black and grey but no I’m retired I love colour. It is instantly uplifting! Stopping by from #blogsharelearn linky and have a lovely day!
Color can really lift the mood and it does wonder for your skin tone! Thanks for stopping by!
I love that purple! I am trying to revamp my style, and working towards more color and less black all the time. I also find I am less interested in prints. I am not sure if that is the current fashion, or that lately I just prefer solid colors more.
#PitStop
Hi Michele, I also gravitate to solids for the majority of my wardrobe, but I do like a lot of color!
Such a great look, Shellie! I am in love with this bold purple on you. Makes me want to wear more of it myself and soon! Have a great weekend.
Glad to be your color inspiration, Jennie 😉
Just stunning Shelly! Yes us middle age gals need lots of color! Purple is not one I can wear…I am Autumn, so teal is my color! It looks great on you and I love your poncho..go Elvis!
Valerie, the important thing is that you know what colors work for you!
Purple is a great color on you, Shellie! Love that fringe, also. Very pretty.
Thanks Debbie!
I think it’s fantastic you encourage women to wear color at any age! It seems there are tons of restrictions as to what women can wear after a certain age, and I don’t think it’s all true. You can find ways to incorporate anything into your style to make it work for your age.
Color is my best friend!
That color is stunning on you! The strong contrast in your natural coloring works beautifully on you!! Love the fun fringe too. Thanks for inviting me to host My Refined Styled with you!

Always an extreme pleasure to share this party with you, Jennifer!
That is such a pretty color on you!
Thanks Amy!!
“My inner Elvis” – I love that, Shellie!!! The purple looks so good on you, and of course it’s the colour of royalty too…!
The two outfits I’ve linked up are polar opposites colour-wise: One is super bright yellow and pink, and the other is super soft pale pastels (even though I know pastels are already pale)! Thank you so much for hosting, have a great Thursday/Friday – and weekend 🙂

You and I, as polar opposites, are a perfect example of going with what works with your coloring. Your muted palette looks stunning on you! I see a fabulous future blog topic there 😉
Thanks for hosting!! I agree that color is so important…and that purple looks fabulous on you! jodie
