I enjoy knowing what the fashion trends are; however, that doesn’t mean that I necessarily will plan to try them all out. For fashion over 40, I feel it is always important to make the clothes work for you instead of the other way around. We over 40 women are too smart and too savvy to even think about becoming slaves to trends.

When I was researching the various Fall fashion trends in preparation for future fashion posts, I was immediately drawn to some while others fall into the probably-not category. Now for me, some of it is purely seasonal. What am I going to do with a puffer coat in the Philippines?!

Typically, I come to you with my take on wearing different trends.But today, I thought it might be fun to explore some Fall 2015 trends I may not be wearing here in Manila, but how you can. Hey, if I can’t wear them here I might as well be able to talk about them!

Macy’s is one of my favorite places when it comes to finding the latest styles. I can browse around and find just about anything I’m looking for and tons of extras to pique my interest. Not only that, but they run some killer sales! So, I scouted out some juicy style choices from Macy’s for today’s post.

Fall 2015 Fashion Trends – How To Wear Over 40

Puffer Coats and Chunky Knits

OK, so the names of these fashion trends I have problems with right out of the gate…puffer, chunky?! My goal is to find styles that flatter my figure, not add to to it!

For chunky knits, look for styles are similar to the style on the far right.  The open neck and proportional sleeves are more body conscious. Also, the sleeker bottom helps balance out the bulk of the sweater and helps promote a vertical line that draws the eye up and down, instead of side-to-side.

Here are two body conscious chunky knits that aren’t so chunky! I like these because the cut gives some flow and the shorter sleeves do not overpower the proportions. They would look great worn with a long sleeved shirt underneath.

Cowl Neck |Gray Cable Knit

For Puffer Coats, this runway coat was obviously made for artistic effect. Look for coats with a cinched waist and a thinner line. I think Nat from Trendy Taste shows how a puffer coat can look sleek and stylish!

Now, these two puffer coats are anything but puffy. The sleek lines and tailoring are oh so figure-flattering.

Neons

Now, my take on neons is not a total “no,” Neon colors can be used sparingly as accents colors and should be well grounded with neutrals, like black or navy blue, to provide warmth, depth and contrast. I wore a fabulous neon yellow necklace paired with a navy blouse and it really popped.

I think J Crew uses pops of bright yellow in an interesting way.

Try to balance neon colors with other neutral colors in deeper shades. The shocking color quality of neons does not add warmth to the skin and can showcase wrinkles when up against your face. Color blocking is a great way to go! Or, try an asymmetrical flowing dress paired with a black or navy blazer.

Carwash Skirts

Actually, this is a trend that I think is really cool.

The problem with this trend is that it has “trendy”stamped all over it. So, I would recommend this one as an end-of-season bargain buy. You may only get a little bit of wear out of it before it goes the way of leg warmers and yo-yo heels, but you can enjoy it until it does

Muted Nature Colors

Last month I wrote a post on the Fall 2015 Color Trends. For the most part I was underwhelmed by some colors in this season’s muted nature color palette. Color is the best friend of women over 40. It adds vibrance and depth to our skin tone and hair when nature is starts to lessen our own natural skin and hair pigment.

Although I know that some women with autumn and spring coloring will look lovely in these colors, it can be a slippery slope to dress in all muted hues. My best suggestion is to use these colors primarily for accessories and accent pieces. You can never go wrong with a fabulous bag!

Mod Print Dress

I am wearing a dress inspired by the Fall 2015 60’s Mod Trend. Of course, we plus-40 women are never slaves to any trend and most of us would agree that most runway looks were never meant to be worn by the average consumer.

But, we can definitely draw inspiration from them. Here is an example of a mod dress from the Valentino Fall 2015 collection. My primary takeaway inspirations are the print and vivid colors.

I am wearing a dress designed by my friend, Kasey Godoy. Kasey and I first met at the gym several years ago. Even though our lives and schedules took us in different directions, I have always kept up with her. A few months ago I discovered that Kasey and some friends had started a dress line, KASH. I love having an opportunity to showcase a budding Filipina designer.

Kasey creates simple sheath dresses that major on vivid colors and patterns. I was immediately drawn to this print shift dress because it evokes the 60’s mod vibe.

Apart from the gorgeous color, I like the comfortable cut of the dress because it fit loosely, yet still tapers in at the knee to provide a flattering line. The cut and style of the dress is equally suited for neutral heels or flats.

I followed the patterned motif of the dress by adding a Fossil stainless steel necklace with a similar pattern.

For another look I chose a silver tassle necklace (Jones New York), silver bangles (Brighton) and stainless steel rings (Fossil).
