I sit here on my last few quiet moments before launching into my list of Christmas activities. The curtains are still drawn, but I can see the sun’s light peaking through the gap at the bottom. Even though I can’t see them, I know that the brilliant rays of the sun are shining just on the other side.

This morning, I was washing a few dishes as Christmas carols played in the background and my mind was drawn to the verse, “the people walking in darkness have seen a great light.”

The people walking in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
a light has dawned.

Isaiah 9:2

We’re all familiar with the Christmas story, but I think it’s significant that the shepherds were the very first people to hear of Jesus’ birth. There they sat…alone on a dark hill…when suddenly an angel appeared to announce the great news that their savior had been born. In the midst of that dark night, a dazzling light lit up the night and, just like that, their lives would never be the same.

I want to share one of my favorite Christmas songs. I love the line, “the hope of the hopeless was born on that night, when God sent His son and said let there be light.”

Once you have experienced Jesus, once your heart has been illuminated by the truth…you can never go back to what you were. It’s always there…it dispels the darkest sorrow and the deepest longing.

We can rest in the calm expectation that Jesus will shine His light into every situation we face; whether big small, disappointing, crushing or scary.

Now, THAT’S a gift worth celebrating!!

May the dazzling light of Jesus’ birth shine in each of your hearts and homes. His transforming light brings illumination, joy and hope for tomorrow.
